The American Diabetes Association indicates that people who have diabetes consume half as much alcohol as other adults. Is drinking alcohol safe for people who have diabetes? Consider these facts when deciding whether you should drink alcohol if you have diabetes.

Possible benefits

There has been some research indicating that moderate alcohol consumption is good for your heart. Individuals who have diabetes face a greater risk of developing heart disease.

Therefore, it is likely okay to enjoy an occasional glass of wine or a low-carb cocktail.

The results of some studies indicate that consuming a daily alcoholic drink can help reduce your A1C and improve blood glucose levels. There is the downside that consuming too much alcohol may lead to increased A1C and blood glucose levels. Consider it a balancing act.

Possible risks

The downside of alcohol consumption is the risk of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. The risk for people who have diabetes is that symptoms of hypoglycemia are similar to those of being intoxicated. These symptoms make it difficult for friends and companions to recognize the danger. The risks are increased if you have not eaten recently or if you were active before you consumed alcohol.

How much is too much?

If you do not drink alcohol, there is really no reason to begin drinking after learning that you have diabetes. Moderation is a key factor if you do have a drink.

Women should consider limiting their alcohol intake to one drink per day. Men should limit their intake to no more than two daily drinks. Consult with your doctor before you drink alcohol if you have diabetes.
